Product Review: KGU Music Saxophone Leather Ligature & Cap
Ligatures are a piece of gear that many saxophonists have fought over for years. I have seen sought-after professionals use several hundred-dollar ligatures, and distinguished professors use a very basic $25 ligature. Personally, I would argue that as long as the ligature securely holds the reeds on the mouthpiece and doesn’t move when you adjust the mouthpiece, you’re good! But, just like most of us, I like a little “bling” sometimes. I recently had the opportunity to try out the KGU Music Leather Ligature & Cap set for the alto saxophone. This setup stands out not just for its aesthetic and natural appeal but also for its functional design tailored to enhance the playing experience.
Full Set, Inlays: Tiger’s Eye, Plated: Raw Brass, Color: Brown
Design & Craftsmanship
Crafted from Crazy Horse leather, the ligature presents a rugged yet refined appearance. The brass clamping mechanism, available in raw brass, silver, or gold finishes, adds a touch of sophistication. Unlike some competitors, this mechanism doesn't loosen up while playing, although the leather will stretch over time. Something that stuck out to me is are the optional natural stone inlays, such as Nuummite or Lapis Lazuli. This provides a personalized flair to your instrument's appearance and let’s you stand out from the crowd.
Functionality & Performances
The ligature includes two interchangeable leather pressure plates—one hard and one soft—allowing for subtle adjustments in tone and response. The hard plate offers a more focused sound, while the soft plate provides a warmer, more mellow tone. This design facilitates experimentation with different tonal qualities, aiding in the development of a player's unique sound.
Suitability for Younger Players
For amateur saxophonists and younger students, the KGU Music Leather Ligature & Cap offers a user-friendly experience. The secure fit and ease of adjustment can help build confidence in handling equipment. While other ligatures like the Rovner 1RL are known for their durability and are often recommended for students, the KGU ligature provides an alternative that combines functionality with a distinctive aesthetic.
