Product Review: MG Leather Works Saxophone Mouthpiece Holder

Let’s face it, the saxophone is a flawed, delicate, and sometimes temperamental instrument with many parts that we have to protect. Hence, many people think buying accessories or fancy gear will improve their sound, simply by spending more money. However, the gear we really should be looking at is something that accomplishes (1) protection, (2) function, and (3) organization. Recently, I had the pleasure of trying out the single-size and double-size MG Leather Works Saxophone Mouthpiece Holder, and I think it covers all three of those categories while looking sleek. In this review, I'll dive into the details of this outstanding accessory and explore why you should get one to throw in your case.

Size: Double, Color: Black

Design & Craftsmanship

The MG Leather Works Saxophone Mouthpiece Holder is handcrafted from high-quality leather, with exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship. The holder's leather is top-notch, and the stitching is impeccable which gives me confidence in its ability to withstand regular use. The case has a very simple design that uses a fold-over flap that locks onto a button stud, which has been very secure so far. The holder's sleek design complements any saxophone case, and with the many different color options available, you can achieve the aesthetic you’re going for.

Versatility & Protection

While on the go, I needed something that could safely protect my tenor and soprano mouthpieces. I opted to go for the single-size option for my soprano setup to hold my Selmer Concept and the double-size option for my tenor setup for my metal and hard rubber Ottolinks. Although it is advertised to only work for alto and tenor mouthpieces, my soprano mouthpiece fits fine. The leather construction and snug fit ensure that the mouthpieces remain scratch-free and secure, even when tossed into a bag or case. There is also a third, triple-size variant available, making it perfect for saxophonists who need to carry multiple mouthpieces for different genres, gigs, or practice sessions. The holder's design allows for easy access and storage, keeping your mouthpieces organized and within reach. In addition, it is lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry in your saxophone case, or bag, and even has a belt loop to attach it on a belt. This convenience factor is a significant advantage, as it allows you to have your mouthpieces readily available without adding bulk to your setup.

Comparison to Other Mouthpiece Holders

Compared to other mouthpiece holders on the market, the MG Leather Works Saxophone Mouthpiece Holder stands out for its exceptional craftsmanship, durability, and stylish design. While other holders may be cheaper or more “industrial”, they often compromise on simplicity and look with rough material and frustrating zippers. This holder is suitable for metal or hard-rubber alto/tenor saxophone mouthpieces, however, ligatures and caps are not suitable for storage in this case.

Size: Single, Color: Black

Its exceptional craftsmanship, durability, and practical design make it a must-have for any saxophonist. Whether you're a professional musician or a dedicated student, this holder is a worthwhile investment that will serve you well for years to come.
